Fight to see more local accountable policing in NW Leics.

  18 June 2007

Police

At present only 1 out of 58 Police Officers is out on the beat at any one time as a result of Labour bureaucracy. In its desire to centralise, local area policing has been left behind. Conservatives believe local people should have a say in how their police service is run. With this in mind, we believe communities should elect an accountable police commissioner to scrutinise the work of our local police.

Fight for a Drug Rehabilitation centre in NW Leics

  18 June 2007

Drug abuse is the bane of society. It generates crime, damages communities and destroys families and lives. We need to fight back and offer drug users a way out. This is why Conservatives believe we need a tenfold increase in the amount of Drug Rehabilitation centres. Currently, there are none of these in NW Leicestershire. I will fight to see that a Drug Rehabilitation Centre is located within the constituency.

Stop over development and garden-grabbing in our towns

  18 June 2007

Labour's Garden Grab

I believe the character of our towns is being threatened by over development, particularly the domino-like sale of houses with large gardens to developers. We also need to consider how we balance developments within the constituency, so we avoid overloading our public services. For this reason, I oppose further green belt development in Ashby.

Regeneration of Coalville as a shopping location

  18 June 2007

Labour has presided over the decline of Coalville as a leisure and shopping location. Their response to ‘out-of-town’ shopping and entertainment centres is to impose parking charges on visitors and shoppers, and to impose ever increasing business rates to anyone wishing trade in the Town Centre. We need to get consumers into Coalville, not hinder and drive them out.  Coalville can once again be a great town if set free from unimaginative wasteful Labour Governance.

Improve transport links and traffic flow within the constituency

  18 June 2007

Many of the most vital roads within North West Leicestershire have turned into bottlenecks over the past decade. The A42 and A453 which are roads desperately in need of widening and investment, have seen their improvement plans stunted under this Labour government. Our town centres don't flow, causing bottlenecks and increased carbon emissions, and our public transport links show little sign of improvement. I will do all I can to get North West Leicestershire moving again.

No to further opencast mining in Ravenstone

  18 June 2007

I opposed the Ravenstone opencast for several reasons. Firstly, it is an eyesore on the wonderful landscape around Ravenstone and Packington. Secondly, whilst mining is in progress, it is causing a considerable negative effect for local businesses and householders. Thirdly, when mining is finished, the site could be filled in with water or possibly used as landfill. Again, this causes enormous environmental concerns. With all this in mind, I will do whatever I can to see there is no further opencast mining beyond what has already been approved..Pilot

Protect NW Leics from illegal traveller encampments.

  30 January 2007

I want to help communities in North West Leicestershire that are being blighted by travellers buying up parcels of land and developing them without official approval.  I believe we should give power back to local communities, and ensure that planning controls are fairly enforced for all.  That is why in November 2007, I went to County Hall and appealed to the Council not to apporve plans for any further sites in NW Leics. I'm happy to say that the plans were then thrown out.

Protect the citizens of NW Leicestershire from big brother government intrusion in the form of ID Cards and various other methods of snooping.

ID Cards: Labour's Bad IDea

The Labour Party wish to impose a tax of at least £93 on everybody under the ID card scheme. These are an invasion of privacy, will not stop identity theft or terrorism. They are a waste on money which would be better spent on more police officers, prison places and drug rehabilitation centres, and I will fight to oppose them.

Fight to ensure that the NHS Healthcare network is retained and not centralised.

  30 January 2007

One of the questions I would like to ask this Labour Government is, "Where has all the extra NHS money gone"? In spite of record tax takes and increased spending, NHS cutbacks are taking place across the country. Labour Health Secretaries regard closure of local medical facilities, and increased distances for patients to travel, as a success. I will fight to see ensure the Healthcare network in NW Leics. is maintained and improved.

Fight to save the NW Leicestershire rural Post Office network from closure

  30 January 2007

Keep our Post Offices open

One of my first acts, when I was selected as the Conservative candidate for NW Leics., was to petition the Labour Government about the importance of saving the rural Post Office network in NW Leics.. Hundreds of petition sheets were distributed across the consistency, and 2240 names were collected and sent off to The Department of Trade and Industry, to show the strength of feeling in the Constituency. I will continue to fight Labour's cutbacks in the vital rural Post Office network.
