MP Andrew Bridgen welcomes Benefit Cap
Andrew Bridgen, MP for North West Leicestershire, has expressed his support in Parliament for the Government’s proposed benefit cap of £500 a week in the face of opposition from Bishops and the Labour Party.
Andrew asked Works and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith: “Does my right hon. Friend agree that those well intentioned but misguided individuals who oppose the introduction of a benefits cap are in serious danger of killing with kindness the very people they seek to help, by condemning them to a lifetime of benefits dependency and worklessness, which the benefits cap will seek to reverse?”
The local MP went on to say: “I remain fully supportive of the benefit cap which is set higher than the average wage here in NW Leics.
“I would like to see these who oppose this cap express the same concern about the vast majority of my constituents, who are working hard, paying their tax and commuting long hours, who don’t have as much money as they would otherwise because they’re paying tax for all of this.”

Andrew Bridgen (North West Leicestershire) (Con): Does my right hon. Friend agree that those well intentioned but misguided individuals who oppose the introduction of a benefits cap are in serious danger of killing with kindness the very people they seek to help, by condemning them to a lifetime of benefits dependency and worklessness, which the benefits cap will seek to reverse?
Mr Duncan Smith: I fully understand those who on every principle and in every regard oppose the cap, but I cannot understand those who say they are in favour of it and then vote against it.
