MP backs spending review decision on new waste facilities
Andrew Bridgen, MP for North West Leicestershire, has welcomed the news that PFI funding will be withdrawn for Leicestershire's new waste facilities as a result of the spending review.
The County Council has been advised that the Government is no longer able to support the scheme, which could have led to an incinerator plant in Bardon.
The news comes after Andrew wrote to DEFRA Secretary Of State Caroline Spelman to express concerns over the scheme and the cost.
Andrew said: “I welcome the Coalition Government's decision to withdraw the funding for this scheme, which was both bad for residents and the taxpayer as a whole.
“We had a situation bequeathed from the last Government which meant that we would be paying for technology for 30 years when it would be out of date in 10 years.
“I would now call upon Leicestershire County Council to review its waste management strategy and develop a solution which does not involve incineration.”
