Rail investment call

11th October 2018

MP for North West Leicestershire Andrew Bridgen has called in Parliament for investment in local railway schemes such as the opening of the Ivanhoe line between Burton-on-Trent and Leicester.

During Transport questions, Andrew asked the Transport Ministerial team ‘Despite being the centre of population of our country, my seat has no railway station. I have been campaigning for many years for the opening of the Ivanhoe line between Burton-on-Trent and Leicester to aid further economic growth and reduce road congestion. Does the Minister agree that it is better to spend money on these local deliverable projects to improve people’s lives than on national white elephant projects with huge runaway budgets?’

In response, Transport Minister Joseph Johnson MP said ‘Of course, we need to invest in transformative schemes such as HS2 and Crossrail, which are going to change connectivity for the better, but we can do everything. We can invest also in the smaller schemes, which will deliver valuable change to local communities.’

Afterwards Andrew said ‘It’s time the Government looked again at the HS2 project which is sucking resources away from the existing network. Reopening the Ivanhoe Line would have a clear benefit for the hundreds of thousands of people who live along the line, as the area continues to experience high economic and housing growth, and would cost a mere fraction of the extraordinary sum of HS2. I will continue to campaign for HS2 to be cancelled and money invested instead into more effective local schemes.’
